An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
