European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
