Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
