In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
