Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
