Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for NYC in First Address
In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
